Zhangjiajie Hiking: Top 5 Hiking Trails in Zhangjiajie

You might have heard that “The views of Zhangjiajie are spectacular, but too many people, too little time to enjoy.”

Go for a hike and the crowds will thin out immediately. There is no better way to experience Zhangjiajie than on foot.

Here we’ve rounded up the 5 best hikes in Zhangjiajie which allows you to immerse in the impressive landscapes looking like something straight out of the Avatar.

1. Tianzi Mountain and Avatar Mountain

  • Location: in Zhangjiajie National Forest Park
  • Difficulty Level: Moderate
  • Duration: 6 hours

The hike to Tianzi Mountain and Avatar Mountain is one of the best hikes in Zhangjiajie as it involves the most iconic and recognizable natural formations in Zhangjiajie National Forest Park also known as Wulingyuan Scenic Area.

You can hike up the Tianzi Mountain instead of wasting your time on queuing for the cable car. The hike takes about 3 hours. Stamina is needed for a 2km almost nonstop staircases.

Once you summit, all of that tough work is rewarded by truly epic views. Another 3-hour hike on the summit is easy and you will be impressed by the highlights such as the Avatar's "Hallelujah Mountain", the “First Bridge under Heaven” in Yuanjiajie scenic area.

2. Yellow Stone Village and Golden Whip Brook

  • Location: in Zhangjiajie National Forest Park
  • Difficulty Level: Moderate to easy
  • Duration: 5-7 hours

Huangshi Village, also known as Yellow Stone Village, is not a village but one of the most scenic areas of the national forest park. The views are amazing, and it is relatively quiet because tour groups don’t visit this area.

There is the possibility to go all the way up and down by cable car. But the hike is so rewarding: meeting wild monkeys, unknown species of birds, and crossing the path of a small river (called Golden Whip Brook) and... hours of sweat worth it.

If you don’t have enough time to hike up and down, you can opt for the tram up and hike down. Please be careful with monkeys.

3.  Yangjiajie

  • Location: in Zhangjiajie National Forest Park
  • Difficulty Level: Challenging
  • Duration: 4-8 hours

Yangjiajie Scenic Area is rugged and less-frequently visited. The hike can be done as an intense and tiring day-hike. If you opt for taking the cable car up and down via Tianzi Mountain, you can save about 4 hours.

The trail on the mountain can be tough going. There are several steep climbs. But all of that tough work is rewarded by truly epic views and no crowds at all. At some places, you have the whole place to yourselves.

Give yourself plenty of time and bring an abundance of real food, snacks, and water.

4.  Zhangjiajie Grand Canyon

  • Location: Zhangjiajie Grand Canyon, about
  • Difficulty Level: Easy
  • Duration: 2 hours

Zhangjiajie Grand Canyon is famous for the Glass Bridge, but it is not all about the bridge. The bridge is only the beginning.

After the glass bridge, you can go on a further walk to have a closer look at the Grand Canyon. It takes about 2 hours to complete the walk, but it is paved all the way along the running creek.

This is an easy and very beautiful walk with a range of beautiful scenery such as waterfalls, soaring cliffs, caves, and a lake.

5. Tianmen Mountain

  • Location: Tianmen Mountain National Forest Park, in Zhangjiajie downtown area
  • Difficulty Level: Easy
  • Duration: 3 hours

Tianmen Mountain is known for its amazing scenery and offers such a great range of opportunities for special experiences, such as the world’s longest cable car and a terrifying glass walkway.

You can take the ropeway or bus to the top of the mountain. From there you walk around the mountain on a series of cliffside paths. The whole top can be circumnavigated in about 3 hours.

The walk is mostly easy physically but hard mentally if you're afraid of heights, especially when you walk on the glass walkways.

You are recommended to go on a clear day as the peak can be wreathed in thick mist.
